Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is typically used for hard metals for which traditional machining techniques are ineffective. EDM machining allows for small, odd-shaped angles, detailed contours or cavities in hardened steel, as well as, exotic metals like titanium and carbide. EDM has also become an integral part for prototype and production parts where production quantities remain low.
Amtech Tool & Machine offers both Wire and Sinker EDM for your machining needs. Wire EDM machining is an electro thermal production process that allows a strand of metal wire to cut through metal by the use of heat from electrical sparks. This process is best for complex parts and precision components out of hardened materials. These wire EDM machines offer cutting areas of up to 48” x 25” x 16” in height.
Sinker EDM machining takes the process to a new level by submerging two metal parts into an insulating liquid which allows for a current to be switched on and off creating an electric tension between the two metal parts. The electrical tension is discharged into a spark which melts the metal. This technique is used to create very complex profiles into a surface or add threads within a fully hardened part.
