Surface grinding is one of the most common grinding operations. The surface grinding wheels are used to grind flat stock or flat surfaces within a work piece. Its finishing process uses a rotating abrasive wheel to smooth the flat surface of metallic or nonmetallic materials giving them a more refined look. These wheels are typically used on horizontal spindle machines and can vary from heavy, rapid stock removal to precision tolerance operations. This method is best used for producing flat stock, grinding large molds and dies or sharpening blades. The best materials to use in surface grinding would be cast iron or mild steel.
